When your car won’t start what should you do?

servicesaturdaySo let us set the scene… You are already to get to where you need to go and you take a seat in your trusty ride when …. IT WON”T START! What? Not today!  Any day but today, not today!

So what do you do now? First if you are by yourself YELL… yes Yell… no this will not make your car start but it will make you feel a little better and then we can move on to figuring out what to do next.

The next step is to try and start the vehicle once more and listen to the vehicle.  Often times we can figure out what is going on by the noises we hear or don’t hear.

  • Silence: If you turn the key and hear nothing, you might be having an issue with your battery cables. They bring the charge from your battery to the starterstart2 to get things rolling, so if they’re corroded, broken, or loose, you’ve got a problem. You can try checking them to see if they’re in good shape, but you may need to replace them. That’s where our Buckeye Honda and Toyota techs come in!
  • Turning over but not starting: If you turn the key and hear the engine attempting to start but not quite getting there, you might have a problem with your spark plugs or your fuel system. Neither are things you can quickly fix, so you may want to call our Honda or Toyota service center in Lancaster and schedule an appointment to get things working efficiently again!
  • Clicking: If you turn the key and hear a clicking noise and then silence, your battery may be dead! Try turning on your headlights or using your power door locks – if you can’t do either, you definitely have a dead battery. You can get a jump and head to your destination, but make sure you head into our Honda or Toyota service departments to have it checked out. You may need to replace the battery, or something in the charging system may not be functioning properly.  Our Central Ohio Honda and Toyota Technicians can run a quick diagnostic on the battery and charging system quickly we won’t break the bank.

startNow if you have  an older vehicle the weather might be to reason for your vehicle not cooperating.  Cold weather and older faulty fuel injection systems don’t get along real well.  The Rain and old distributor caps usually don’t play well together either.  The good news is the Qualified Honda and Toyota Technicians at Buckeye in Lancaster Ohio are equipped to handle these issues and get you back on the road quickly.

One of the best ways to not get stranded is to have your vehicle maintained regularly, including a battery and charging system check when you are in the dealership.  Again this is quick and free with service and can really save you a lot of time, hassle and headaches.  So the next time you are in at Buckeye ask them to check your battery, you might just save yourself the need to Yell!

Thursday’s Thoughts : What To Bring To The Dealership

thursdayWhat to Take With You When Buying a Car

You’re off to the dealership to buy a new, or new-to-you, car.  You’re excited and already imagining yourself cruising down the road with the top down (okay maybe that’s my imagination, but you get the point).  Buying a car can be a joyous occasion, but it can instantly turn sour if you’ve forgotten one of those important items you were supposed to bring to the dealership with  you.  We don’t want you to have to be nervous about forgetting something;  therefore, we’ve created a list of the things you will need when you go to buy that car.

Valid Driver’s License

I never thought that I world ever forget to bring along my driver’s license until it happened to me.  Make sure it is in a secure place (preferably your wallet) along with some important documents that we will be discussing later on.

Proof of Insurancelic

Can’t drive your new car if you can’t prove that you’re insured to drive the car.   That would be a major bummer, especially if you drove a long distance to pick up your new ride.

Checkbook

It would surprise you the amount of people who forget this particular item   If you want to put money down, bring this little baby,  it will make the process a lot easier.

Trade-In Appraisal

Have you been online to see how much your vehicle is worth?  Bring it with you it’s good to have for negotiation on trade-in value, so you can put more toward your new car.

Title or Loan Documentation

Whether you’ve paid off  your trade-in or still owe a little more, the dealership you visit to buy your car is going to need this paperwork

Car Key and Dollars isolated on white.Your Trade-In

This one might not be so hard to remember since you will most likely be driving it to the dealership, but did you remember to bring all the keys and manuals that go with your trade-in?  Also, if you have a record of the regular maintenance you’ve had done to your trade-in, you will get more value for it!

Thursday’s Thoughts: A Clean Trade

thursdayA Clean Trade

When deciding to purchase a new or new-to-you car, many consumers depend on the trade-in value of their current vehicle to help pay for the new vehicle. It can be disappointing to be informed that your car is not worth what you had anticipated.
Education is the best tool when purchasing a new vehicle and when trading in your older vehicle. When consumers understand the evaluation process of the trade-in from a dealer’s perspective, it will help them get more value from their used car.

It Pays to Maintain

Ensuring that your vehicle has been properly serviced at all of the recommended intervals published by the manufacturer of the vehicle can significantly increase the value of your trade-in.
Not only maintaining the vehicle, but also having a detailed record of service history on-hand when you make your trade can raise the value as well.

Make it Shinetradein

Appearance and cleanliness are critical parts of the evaluation process,  so have the vehicle washed and the interior vacuumed and polished. If the vehicle appears thoroughly clean, you can get more money for your vehicle.
It’s also important to make sure the body of the vehicle is in good shape, If there are any dents, dings or scratches larger than the size of a standard credit card on the exterior of the vehicle, then they should be repaired prior to trading it in to increase the value.

Education is Key

A mistake that some consumers may make is not knowing the value of their vehicle at trade-in time. Without knowing the value, negotiation is pointless, and the dealer may not see the reasoning for the price a customer has decided the vehicle is worth.
Using third-party valuation sites can be helpful, but you as the consumer must be objective. Selecting “excellent condition” when the car may just be in “good condition” doesn’t give you an accurate estimate, and disappointment will soon follow when you’re not offered the amount you think you deserve. If unsure of the actual condition and quality of your car, try to look at it as if it doesn’t belong to you and read the descriptions given by the third-party sites.
It’s also easy to choose to value the vehicle at ‘retail value,’ but if you’re trading in a vehicle that most accurate value to look for are the ‘trade-in’ and ‘wholesale’ values.
The windshield and tires of your vehicle can be a significant factor when it comes to determining the value of your car as well.  Make sure that your tires are in good condition and there are no cracks in your windshield.

Last Bit of Housekeeping

It is important to bring two sets of keys for the vehicle, the manuals that it came with and the floor mats. These all increase the value and convenience for the next person that purchases your vehicle.
Purchasing a new car can be a big decision and investment, so make it worth your while by taking care of the car you currently own, knowing that you will one day trade it in for a new one.

The used car appraisers at Buckeye Honda and Buckeye Toyota of Lancaster have over 50 years of combined experience evaluating trade-ins and giving customers a fair-deal.  If you are interested in what your vehicle is worth, bring it by and let us take a look at it.  We can provide you with a condition report and a cash price offer to purchase on the spot.

Thursday’s Thoughts: Tips to Plan for Roadside Emergencies

thursdayThere are many things that can happen while you’re driving that might leave you stuck in a parking lot or on the side of the road. Luckily, the majority of these situations are minor roadside emergencies that can be planned for and handled with minimal stress and inconvenience – provided you have a plan! You can’t plan for every possible situation, but the most common roadside challenges are easy to navigate. Here are some tips for planning for roadside emergencies from your Columbus Area Honda and Toyota dealer:

Keep Phone Numbers in your Car

These days, everyone seems to have a cell phone with a contact list built in. It’s still a good idea to keep a list of phone numbers in your car in case your phone battery dies or is lost just when you need your contact list! Add your insurance agent, towing companies, roadside assistance plan information if you have one, and Buckeye Honda (1-866-822-7485) and Toyota’s (1-866-698-2709)  service center to the list of numbers just in case.

Think About a Roadside Assistance Planroad

When you buy a new car, many times a roadside assistance plan is offered for so many miles or months. Car insurance plans may also include roadside assistance as do some credit cards or a national roadside membership. If you don’t have roadside assistance coverage under any of these options, consider buying a roadside assistance plan.  The Business Managers at Buckeye Honda and Buckeye Toyota can help make this process easy with one of our roadside assistance programs.

Keep Access to Cash

If you need to be towed, have gas delivered, or help changing a tire – chances are you need to pay a service provider to help you out. If you have a roadside assistance plan, these are probably included as part of the plan coverage. If you don’t, you will want to have access to cash for these minor emergencies whether it is an envelope of cash hidden under your seat or a credit card.

Team Member Monday: Betzi Cable

10734383186_e45f3b9913_zWelcome to Monday’s Team Member Spotlight of Buckeye Toyota’s own Betzi Cable!

Betzi’s official title could be inventory manager or  customer service representative but in the end she does both of these jobs and much much more.  When something needs done outside the general focus of selling or servicing a vehicle Betzi can, has or is prepared to do it.  Over the past year and a half she has mastered a network of contacts at other dealerships that take most people 5 yeas to cement.  This allows her to efficiently get you the vehicle that you want, when you want it.  Betzi is also versed in the many things it takes to help keep the dealership running from the bookkeeping to data entry, customer service to knowing who to call to order supplies… you could say that Betzi is the resident expert in a lot of stuff!

Betzi calls Lancaster Ohio home and has for her entire life.  She has 2 sons that are currently attending Lancaster High School and keep her pretty busy when she isn’t at Buckeye.  One day she hopes all of her hard work pays off and she is able to take her fantasy trip to the beautiful Ireland.  She would love to visit the north reaching Donegal all the way to the southern area of West Cork.  Watch out Ireland, Betzi is coming, you have been warned! 10734594813_23031b4e91_z

When not at Buckeye, Betzi likes to curl up with a great book from her favorite authors; Nora Roberts and Dakota Cassidy.  Interesting fact: One of Dakota Cassidy’s characters is based on Betzi.  She won a contest and was chosen to have her likeness included in one of the author’s books.  Next time you see Betzi ask her the title of the book and how she was able to win this awesome contest.

Betzi admits that her favorite comfort food is potato soup, “it’s the perfect combination of taste, texture, warm and goodness in one bowl.”  Although she likes to listen to all kinds of music lately she enjoys Miranda Lambert “Mama’s Broken Heart”, for those familiar with the song this might give you a little insight into Betzi, for those that are not you might want to check it out.

When asked to pick her favorite Toyota, she wasted no time and quickly named the Blue Ribbon Metallic Toyota Tundra!  We have to say we don’t disagree with her choice.

Next time you are in Buckeye Toyota stop and say hello to Betzi and don’t forget to ask her about her book character!

Your Car Battery: Have it tested before it loses that spark!

servicesaturdayGetting stranded in a parking lot or your own driveway from a dead battery is frustrating and can cause a serious inconvenience for your day. While car batteries last for many years in most cases, there are some things you can do to prolong their life even longer and avoid being stuck with a dead battery! Here are some tips from Buckeye Honda and Buckeye Toyota of Lancaster for battery maintenance:

Get Battery Power Checked Out

You can have your battery checked at your Buckeye Service Center to see how much power is left. If it is very low, it may be recommended that you get a new battery to avoid waiting until it completely dies before you replace it.  A good time to check battery power is anytime you are in for any maintenance.  A quick test can be run and the results available to you before you leave.  This way you know the health and life of your battery before it is too late.  At the first signs of a weakening battery you need to speak with one of our trained service professionals, they know the exact battery for your Honda, Toyota or pre-owned Central Ohio vehicle.

A couple of things that can contribute to your battery failing:

Age

If the battery is more than five years old and there’s any sign of it struggling to start the car, get it replaced. Some will struggle on for a bit but many won’t. It’s much better done at your convenience than as a roadside emergency.

hondabattCharge

If you mostly do short journeys or leave the car standing for days at a time, this can shorten the life of your battery.

Load

Check that everything electrical is turned off when you park up – even an interior light, trunk light, or radio left on overnight can kill a battery when it’s truestartcold.

Keep up with Your Auto’s Maintenance Schedule

The best way to keep your car rolling down the road is to keep up with your regular maintenance schedule. Oil changes, filter changes, brakes and tires are all good things to keep up with when it comes to maintaining your car.  Then, if you notice your car is having trouble starting, bring it into the Buckeye Honda or Buckeye Toyota service center for a battery check up right away.
